What to Expect at Startup Weekend

Not everyone is a Startup Weekend pro. For those of you who don’t quite know what to expect, we’ve put together a couple of important factors for you to consider:

You won’t sleep much

There is so much packed into this weekend – from the opening speakers on Friday night to final presentations on Sunday night. There’s so much to do and so little time to do it that most participants stay and work into the wee hours of the morning and are back at it by first sunlight. Caffeine will definitely become your best friend. Although there is much pressure to have a working model to present on Sunday, a lot of what keeps you functioning on little to no sleep will be the pure excitement of creating an awesome new company.

You’ll work your butt off

Granted, there is a lot of fun to be had during the weekend, but there is also a lot of work to be done. After pitches are done and teams are formed, everyone puts their heads down and gets to work. You’ll have 2 days to come up with every aspect of the company, and you’ll have to use your time wisely to get everything done in time. By the time Sunday flies by, you’ll never again question whether you have what it takes.

You’ll have the opportunity to present your big idea to a group of peers and mentors

If you’re coming into the weekend with an idea for a company, you’ll be invited to explain the concept in 30 short seconds – but that’s just the beginning. Fast-forward to Sunday and we have the same room full of people, but this time we’ll throw judges, mentors and potential investors into the mix. No pressure. There will be plenty of mistakes and awkward pauses, but most importantly, you’ll learn exactly what makes a pitch successful.

You’ll learn exactly what it takes to build a lean company

This is the entire purpose of the weekend. We throw engineers, designers, marketers and all other types of creators in a room with each other and let them hash out ideas and solve problems. You’ll learn exactly what you need (and what you don’t need) to create a minimum viable product to present to potential investors. We have mentors standing by and plenty of beer in the fridge.

Startup Weekend is an intense, exciting and exhausting whirlwind of an event. You will learn so much about what it means to be an entrepreneur, make some lasting connections and have a great time building something great. So, what are you waiting for? Get your tickets now.
